A newly approved vaccine said to be effective and safe for children has been launched in Malawi. Clinical trials began in Ndirande, Blantyre, a largely populated area prone to typhoid breakouts. The programme is being administered by the Malawi-Liverpool Wellcome Trust while the Bill and Melinda gates Foundation provides funding. An estimated 24,000 children, aged 9-12 months, will receive vaccination and tests to prove the efficacy of the vaccine.
The vaccine named Typbar TCV has been tested and used in India for over 12 years and costs $1.50 for developing countries.
